Leas' heroes include 11-time world champion barrel racer Charmayne James and four-time world champion barrel racer Kristie Peterson. Smith said her idols are her parents, Laura and Jerry. Leas plans to compete in all six in the senior girls division. Leas wants to compete in rodeo professionally. Smith wants to become a massage therapist. Leas said she's been riding horses \"my whole life.\"īoth plan to go to college, where they hope to continue their rodeo careers.Īfter that, though, they have planned different career paths. \"I competed in my first rodeo when I was 2 years old,\" Smith said. Both have ridden horses for as long as they can remember. While little separated the two cowgirls timewise, a closer look reveals they are similar in other areas. \"I had lots of baby powder to soften 'em up. \"It was humid this morning, which is usually bad for your rope,\" Leas said. On top of those challenges, the muddy, wet conditions Tuesday morning also made the competition more difficult. Unlike baseball pitchers, however, to win an event like the Little Britches Finals, they have to throw a strike every time. While competitors have to be experts on their horses, they also have to be as accurate as baseball pitchers with their ropes. if you break out (get out too fast), then it's plus-10 (seconds)\"īut that's not all. \"If you get out late, you're going to be slow. \"You've got to get out good,\" Smith said. The key to posting a quick time in breakaway roping, an event designed to prepare competitors to compete in team roping when they get older, is to start out quickly. \"Now, all I've got to do is catch on my second run,\" Leas said. When you have a quick time like that, it takes the pressure off.\" \"I like to go out toward the top,\" Smith said. The difference separating the two riders is little more than the blink of an eye, and both came away from the performance satisfied. Leas, a 17-year-old cowgirl from Las Vegas, Nev., one-upped Smith with a time of 3.15 seconds, which stood up as the fastest time in the performance. Nobody came close to that time until Leas entered the box. Smith, a 17-year-old cowgirl from Montrose, recorded a blistering 3.86-second run in the senior girls breakaway roping Tuesday morning at the 2005 National Little Britches Finals Rodeo. Jessica Smith laid down the gantlet with a blazing run.
